What is a dongle?

Just in case any of you out there were unsure of what, exactly, a dongle might be, Wikipedia offers as good a definition as any:

“Dongle: a small piece of hardware that connects to another device to provide it with additional functionality.”

Dongles come in all shapes and sizes and provide additional functionality for all kinds of computing devices. The simplest of dongles extend a computer or mobile phone’s basic functionality, for example, by allowing you to connect a standard USB port (USB-A) to multiple USB devices, while sophisticated dongles have effectively become highly compact and portable laptop docking stations. With the proper dongle, for example, a basic laptop computer can become as powerful and as connected as a powerful desktop computer.

DongleHub is a website that focuses exclusively on dongles, all types of dongles: the large, small, simple, sophisticated, cheap, expensive, useful, and even the frivolous. Our staff lives and breathes dongles. From the simplest one that is really nothing more than a USB-powered LED light to a sophisticated MacBook Pro docking station with thirteen in-and output ports, we probably have tried the dongle you are interested in, and there is probably one sitting in our lab somewhere.

Trust us, we do dongles. We have probably tried the one you’re thinking about buying, and if we haven’t, send us a note and we’ll take a look at it.

We live for dongles!
